Preparing for 2023 V2V

Recommended Posts

It is time to start preparations for V2V 2023!  It will be the Twenty Third run of this VMC event.   I am honored to be the coordinator.

Securing leg captains is the first step in planning this event.  If enough leg captains volunteer, we will proceed with planning this event.   Leg captains are responsible for planning the route, choosing a hotel, as well as selecting gas and lunch/dinner stops.  If you are interested in being a leg captain or assisting with a leg, please reach out.

In 1921 the Victory Highway Association was organized   The Associations purpose was to create a transcontinental highway in honor of the men and women who served in WWI.  The route later became known as Route 40.  Now, more than 100 years later, parts of the original Route 40 have been replaced with interstate roads and other highways.  The 13 leg relay will run from west to east this year.  The information below suggests approximate start stop points.  The start and end destinations of each leg are up to the leg captains.

Ok, yes, going all the way through downtown around rush hour wasn't too bad but I did get off at the wrong exit and got kind of turned around. I'll start looking at routes again prior to that work training I have, because once that starts I won't have much free time.

John and I have decided to take a more southerly (Highway 50) route through Colorado and Kansas.  Dodge City will offer a new stop complete with gunfights, beer and whiskey.  If you want to know where steaks come from, and don't mind the smell, we can leave through a fairly large feedlot on the edge of town. Then Mullinville will offer a suprise along the road. As we travel east, we will go through the Flint Hills, another scenic drive.   Although John will still have me beat with the road from Durango, eventually getting to Canon City.

Which legs and which part of Colorado?  I want to ride from Utah Leg through to 2nd Colorado Leg.

Here's a link to the route I'm proposing: https://goo.gl/maps/7ZvZTjsHQku3oyoQ6.

1st leg will go from Richfield, UT and end in Durango, CO.  2nd Leg will go from Durango to Canon City via the Million Dollar Highway and US 50.

I'll be leading both legs.

Although the responsibility for making hotel reservations for Richfield is the Leg 3 Captain, of which no one has volunteered to lead, I will do it in the meantime, and try to get the info to everyone as soon as possible.  I will post the info in the Leg appropriate threads: Leg 3, Leg 4, and Leg 5.

I'm checking out motels in Dodge City.   Most are fairly close to the "old west" part of town. There's a nice casino but the Hampton Inn there is way over $100/night. I've been to Dodge for work and the Quality Inn is nice and reasonably priced.

As far as Ottawa, there are some places close to Interstate.

I just noticed we don't have any Leg-specific threads for the 2023 V2V, or did I not go to the right place?

I think we’re waiting on Vivian - Pushstart - to put them up.  Needs to get done pretty quick.  Both Kelley and Rose deferred to her.  I sent her a text yesterday and have still not heard back.  Even if no leg captain yet - leg threads should be up already.

By the way - I can set up Richfield.  If no one steps up I may consider adding another leg if I can manage the additional time off.  Big ‘if’ there.  Let me know if you want me to help with Richfield hotel.  Have stayed there and travelled through quite a bit.

From what I can see, there are quite a few places for lodging:

- Super 8

- Holiday Inn Express

- Best Western

- Ramada

- Appletree Inn

- Quality Inn

The first 3 are at I-70 and N. Main St. (north part of town).  Ramada is just south of there on N. Main.  And the last 2 are on S. Main.  My route from Richfield is going east on Hwy 119 so any of the above should work fine.

Do you have any info on any of the above places?  Some are around $100/night, while some are as low as $65/night.  If you have any experience with any of these, I'd appreciate your recommendations/opinions.

Rooms at the Jailhouse Casino in Ely are going FAST!!!!!!!!

Any chance you can Captain Ely to Richfield?   Guess they still need a Captain for Legs 1 and 3 but I’ve not seen any asks for help with these.  So I guess I’ll ask for this one. ☺️
